2012-01-13 - Silver Bell/Columbia/Martinez Mines hike   214 Photos   Jan 13, 2012

This photo gallery covers the whole gamut...
A long rough drive, steep mountain climbs by vehicle as well as on foot, wandering over hill and dale, topping a few peaks, exploring a few mines, a long, steep mountain descent, boulder-hopping, another steep climb back to the car and of course the long rough road out again.

2012-01-10 - Peak 4110   68 Photos   Jan 10, 2012

Another day's adventure in the Mineral Mountain Quadrangle. This time we explored the depths of a horizontal mine then followed it up with a short but steep hike to Peak 4110, passing Peak 3957 along the way. Although barely a 2.4 mile round trip it was a workout when accompanied with 1061' of accumulated elevation gain. In short... A beautiful day! Great company! Healthy workout! Awesome scenery!

2012-01-08 - Superstition Ridgeline hike   84 Photos   Jan 8, 2012

A 10+ mile trek across the Superstition Ridgeline, gaining almost 4200' in accumulated elevation along the way.
We began the hike 15 minutes before sunrise at the Carney Trailhead. The first 1.5 miles we climbed 1500' up to the West Boulder Canyon saddle where we took our first break, drying the sweat-soaked layers before continuing. It was a constant series of ups and downs, passing the upper reaches of Hieroglyphics, Hog and other unnamed canyons to our left and West Boulder Canyon, Weaver's Needle and Four Peaks to our right as we hiked toward our destination below Siphon Draw. At every point along the way, no matter which direction we looked the views were simply awesome! Although we took numerous photos, they simply cannot grasp what the eye can behold.

2012-01-07 - Peak 3881   50 Photos   Jan 7, 2012

I spent another day in the Mineral Mountain Quadrangle, located between Superior and Florence, Arizona. It was a continuation of the process of mapping every road/quad track as far as they went. I started on the Orphan Boy Loop Road and followed every offshoot to the south. The second one brought me to a mine at the very end of the track. From there I climbed up to the summit of Peak 3881. On the return trip I followed a few offshoots to the north of Ajax Mine Trail.

We spent an afternoon wandering up an unnamed canyon along the western edge of the Superstition Mountains. We continued as far as we could yet still return before dark. However, based on what caught our eye, we will return again for a climb all the way up, possibly returning via Hog Canyon.

On the Circlestone hike we racked up 19 miles and 4100' of accumulated elevation gain over 9 hours, including an hour spent at the ruins.
Circlestone is purported to be an ancient Solstice and Equinox Sun Watch Station, built by the ancient Sinagua, a pre-Columbian cultural group of people in Arizona.
